C. S. Lewis: Suggestions/Directions

We begin class with what I rate as one of Lewis' great books, The Abolition of Man.  We are going to concentrate on its first chapter, "Men without Chests".  I strongly encourage you also to look into the book's second and third chapters, as well as its appendix, which contains illustrations of The Way (this will help you to understand my talk of 'the Tradition').

In Chapter 1, pay particularly close attention to the scene of Coleridge at the waterfall, and what Lewis tells you about Gaius and Titius' account of what happens there.  To fully understand that, you will need to understand Lewis' alternative account of what happens there.  You will need to read and re-read those pages.  Finally, be sure that you understand Lewis' image of human beings without chests.
